Disabled Travel

If you are travelling on your own, or are accompanying someone who is disabled on a holiday, there are several things that you can do beforehand to ensure that your vacation will be a good and smooth one. Many foreign destinations are not set up for wheelchair accessibility, so doing some research before your trip can be vital.

One of the best things that you can do is to plan your trip well in advance. When you start booking your flights and hotel rooms, make sure that you inform the companies in advance that you will require some assistance. Some airlines only allow a certain number of wheelchairs on a plane, so make sure that you let them know before you book. The same goes with hotels. Some hotels may have certain rooms allocated for wheelchair accessibility, so you will need to let them know as you book. The last thing you want to do is to arrive somewhere only to find that you have the room on the top floor and there is no elevator on the premises. There are several websites which hold information on accessible hotels and hostels, so have a look at these before you book.

When you decide whereabouts in the world you would like to go on holiday, you will also need to research wheelchair accessibility. Some cities are not set up for wheelchairs, which could ruin your holiday before it even starts. Do some research into sites to see and things to do, and make sure that you will be able to join in with the activities. You may find that all travel is by foot or bicycle, which could be a potential nightmare. A little bit of research beforehand will go a long way to ensure that you will have a great holiday abroad!
